Methamphetamine seizure is among largest ever in Central Valley

State authorities have seized 176 pounds of methamphetamine from a Madera, Calif., home, one of the largest seizures ever of the drug in the Central Valley, officials said Friday.

Agents with the state Department of Justice and officers with the California Highway Patrol descended on the home Thursday night and found nearly $1 million worth of methamphetamine and $58,000 in cash, along with a lab to convert the drug from a liquid to a solid, the state attorney general’s office said in a statement.

The seizures came just hours after Atty. Gen. Kamala Harris released a report stating that most of the country’s meth comes through a Mexico-to-California route.

The Central Valley home was empty at the time of the search, and no arrests were made. Officials said the drugs were probably smuggled into the Valley from Mexico in liquid form and were then turned into a solid inside the Madera lab.

The investigation is ongoing, officials said.
