U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers seized more than $1 million in methamphetamine from two women who attempted to smuggle the drugs in their vehicles’ gas tanks, officials said.
According to CBP officers, $465,465 worth of meth was found Sunday in the gas tank of a 40-year-old Somerton woman’s truck. Also Sunday, $584,815 in meth was found in the gas tank of 43-year-old Somerton woman’s van, officials said.
Authorities did not say whether the women were working together in a statement issued Wednesday.
CBP officers originally referred both women for vehicle inspection when they attempted to enter the United States through the San Luis port of entry from Mexico. A CBP narcotics detention K-9 alerted officers to a drug presence, CBP officials said.
The women are in custody and the vehicles and drugs were seized. CBP officers turned them over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations unit.
